From Pastries to Prosecco: My Blueprint for the Perfect Day in Edinburgh & Beyond

As a hospitality consultant, I spend my life analysing what makes a venue ‘work.’ But when the weekend rolls around, I’m looking for soul. My ideal day is a masterclass in local gems, family magic, and the kind of hospitality that makes you feel right at home.

The Morning Ritual: Slow Coffee in South Queensferry

Every great day starts with a slow start and coffee. For me, that means, pairing a great cup of coffee with one of Dune’s expertly crafted signature pastries. The beautiful view of the Forth and the Bridges also adds to an idyllic morning when making your pastry collection.

Family First: Creating Memories in West Lothian or Stirlingshire

The middle of the day is dedicated to having fun and quality time with my favourites – my family.  We’re heading to Blair Drummond Safari Park. It’s the gold standard for a family day out. Vast, engaging, and perfect for a big family picnic. Or a bit closer to home we are heading on walk at House of Binns. We love trekking up to the golden tower, transforming the landscape into a scene from The Gruffalo or Jurassic Park for the kids.  Then literally next door we always find ourselves at Mannerstons. From a professional standpoint, their consistency is incredible. Whether it’s a high-quality burger for lunch or their to-die-for Empire biscuits with a cuppa. It’s a local institution that never misses a beat.

The Evening: Date Night in the City

Once the babysitters are on duty, the parent cap comes off and the date night begins. We always head into the heart of Edinburgh to rediscover the city’s best corners.  The Aperitif: We start at The Huxley. Tucked into our favourite corner with a view of the Castle, it’s a glass of Prosecco for me and an Amaretto Sour for the husband.  Then for the Nostalgia: A visit to Monteiths, hidden down a historic close off the Royal Mile. This was our first date spot, and returning for cocktails and those iconic haggis bon-bons is a sentimental must.

The Grand Finale: Fine Dining & Nightcaps

For the main event, the choice is always tough because Edinburgh’s culinary scene is so vibrant. We might head to Wedgewood for a masterclass in Scottish fine dining or opt for the warmth and impeccable service at Solti (their Nepalese flavours are unmatched). However, being a wine lover, I am currently eyeing Café Carlton for Luca’s Sommelier Series. As someone in the industry, I find their approach to wine education and pairing incredibly exciting – it’s exactly the kind of elevated experience I look for. To end the evening, we may just have time to finish the night with a nightcap at Juniper Bar, perfectly located across from Waverly Station, our bus stop and round the corner from the tram too! Before heading home to catch that elusive beauty sleep.

Describe your most ideal day from beginning to end.
